1. To what extent do you think subject collaboration is important?

  • Collaboration can be used to geography's advantage through highlighting the relevance of the subject to modern life, survival in the world of work and of course ensuring that it survives in the curriculum without being swallowed by other subjects. (by MS)

2. What examples have you used or do you think could be developed?

  • We have been working on a cross-curricular day long project - Geography, Science and Design& Technology. WE have designed a project based around the concept of 'Survival'. There will be three groups of about 25 students split into smaller groups who will be 'air dropped' in a given environment i.e. Desert; they then have to research the location of the climatic region (using google earth), explore the climate conditions and then add to this a little science on what extremes the body can be subjected to! The students are then provided with a range of materials (mainly recycled materials - boxes, bubble wrap, drinks bottles etc.) and set the challenge to design and build a workable artefact to help them survive in the climate. They must then present their artefact to the rest of the group and justify how it will help tackle the climate conditions in order to help them to survive. (by MS)

3. How can we encourage collaboration that maintains a strong subject identity?

  • Take a lead role - put forward lots of ideas that have a geographical twist and help the other subject teams to find suitable cross-curricular links. (by MS)
